The August CRC event will be on Wednesday, August 15th at 6:00 pm. This will be held at Suede Supper Club
on 816 Johnnie Dodds Blvd. in Mt. Pleasant. The event will be guest
speaker, Dr. Juan Carlos Velez. He is an Attending Nephrologist at
MUSC. The topic is "Fact or fiction about sports drinks. What the body
needs when working out." Dr. Velez plays on the U.S. Medical soccer
team. He was born in New Jersey and grew up in Peru playing soccer all
of his life.
CRC t-shirts and singlets will be available for purchase at the August 15 event.

Charleston Marathon
The CRC is looking for a
dedicated individual to represent the running community on the
Charleston Marathon committee. The time commitment is one scheduled
meeting per month which usually occurs around 8:30 am at North
Charleston City Hall. In addition to the scheduled meetings, the
appointed representative may need to spend a couple of hours per month
following up on initiatives related to the race planning and
organization. The position is a great opportunity to be part of one of
the largest races in the Lowcountry. If you are interested in this position, please contact Jeff Baxter.
Warrior Run in Ireland
Think you're a warrior runner? Do
you train like a warrior running? Here's your chance to prove it at the
Warrior Run. Join the other clans of warriors in Strandhill, Co. Sligo, Ireland on August 2013 and
see how you do. The Warrior Run is a 15K road race and cross country climb on the coast of Ireland.
Strandhill Village is 8 kilometres west of Sligo town, situated on the Atlantic seaboard and nestled at the foot of Knocknarea Mountain. On its summit (1,070 ft), sits a megalithic
cairn where Maeve the legendary Queen of Conaught is reputedly buried.
Each year runners from all over Ireland (and various parts
of the world) converge on Strandhill to follow in the footsteps of her
ancient warriors.
We are looking to the CRC to see how many people would
be interested in traveling to Ireland and showing them how we run in the
Lowcountry. Give us your thoughts and questions. We want you to come with us and be a Warrior!
Check out the website at
http://www.warriorsfestival.com and let us know if you might be interested, should we coordinate a trip. Please contact Meredith Nelson for additional details.
Barefoot Running Survey
Researchers at the University of
Tennessee are conducting a study that will document the prevalence of
common running injuries in distance runners. We are also interested in
your thoughts, positive or negative, as a distance runner regarding
barefoot-style running. We are contacting runners across the country so
that we can study a broad spectrum of runners.
The questionnaire consists of questions about your running habits,
previous injuries (if any), demographics, and thoughts (if any) about
barefoot-style running. We estimate it will take about 15 minutes for
most people to complete the survey. Your participation in this study is
purely voluntary, and to protect your identity your name will not be
recorded. All participants in the study will be distance runners over
the age of 18 years.
The results of this study will add to the body of knowledge about
injuries that are common among distance runners today, and how these
relate to running mileage or other characteristics of contemporary
runners. If you are willing to assist and contribute to research about
today’s runners, please follow the link below to the questionnaire:
